Most people have heard of taking fish oil for it’s health benefits. Some people might even be able to tell you that it is good for your heart. But I think that is usually the most the average person knows about why they should be taking Omega 3s. In fact, I asked a few people while in the “supplements” aisle at the grocery store and I even got this exact reply, “Yeah, my doctor says I should take some fish oil….so I just make sure to get a filet o’ fish once in awhile.”
Oh. Good. Lord. In. Heaven. People. Need. Help.
I know that person had the best of intentions and genuinely thought they were making good decisions for their body. But, man oh man, were they off course.
So here’s a quick, short and sweet, lesson on Omega 3 fatty acids:
Omega 3s are considered a “good fat” that helps in healthy body processes like building cell membranes in the brain and blood clotting. They have been shown to help the body protect itself against heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and stroke. They are also touted as effective in reducing triglyceride levels, fighting depression, alleviating asthma symptoms, reducing symptoms associated with ADHD, and fighting Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. (pretty impressive list…)
Omega 3s are considered an “essential nutrient” meaning that it is ESSENTIAL that you get this NUTRIENT into your DIET because the body has no means to make it on its own.
So where can you get it?
Walnuts and Flaxseed are excellent sources, along with fish such as trout, herring and salmon. It’s always a great idea to get your essential nutrients from food sources as much as possible. Experts suggest eating these types of fish 2-3 times every week.
You may have also heard of Omega 6s. Omega 6 fatty acids are found in meats, oils, and fatty foods. The American diet is typically far heavier in Omega 6s than in Omega 3s. And research has shown that the imbalance of the two fatty acids contributes to many chronic diseases.
Do you get enough in your diet?
The answer is likely “NO!” which is why doctors such as Dr. Oz, suggest taking a daily supplement. But you have to be careful. In the following video Dr. Oz talks about the dangers of fish oils and buying them just anywhere. It’s pretty scary. But you will see he recommends two very specific types of fish oil. And one of them I can help you with.
